This site is for education

Nidarshana Vedh Ayurveda explains Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, as the classical texts and later teachers describe it. Everything here is educational content only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it is not a substitute for seeing a qualified health professional. We are writers and researchers, not your doctor, and we do not know your medical history.

When a page says that Ayurveda uses a herb, a food or a practice for something, it is reporting what the tradition says. It is not a claim that the herb, food or practice works, and it is never a claim that it treats, cures or prevents any disease. Where modern research exists we try to say what it found. Where it does not, we say that too.

Do not stop or change any treatment

Do not start, stop or change any treatment, medicine, diet or exercise programme because of something you have read here. If you take prescribed medicines, keep taking them as directed, and talk to the doctor who prescribed them before you make any change. If you think you may have a medical problem, or your symptoms are getting worse, see a doctor. Do not delay getting care because of anything on this site.

In an emergency, call your local emergency number straight away. In India that is 112. Chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding, severe allergic reaction, thoughts of harming yourself and a child who is seriously unwell are all emergencies.

Herbs can interact with medicines and are not safe for everyone

Herbs, spices, oils and Ayurvedic preparations are active substances.

  • They can interact with medicines, including blood thinners, diabetes medicines, blood pressure and thyroid medicines, sedatives and immunosuppressants. Some can make a medicine stronger, weaker or more dangerous.
  • Many are not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and many have not been studied in children.
  • Some are unsuitable for people with liver, kidney, heart, thyroid or autoimmune conditions, for people who are due to have surgery, and for people with allergies.
  • Quantities used in cooking are very different from the doses in capsules, powders and extracts.
  • Some Ayurvedic products sold around the world have been found, when tested, to contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury or arsenic, or undeclared medicines. Where a product comes from, and how it is made, matters.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about every herb and supplement you take, and ask before you start a new one.

Who to see

See a qualified doctor for any health concern. If you want Ayurvedic treatment, in India see a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, one who holds a recognised degree (the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, BAMS) and is registered with the relevant state or national council. Outside India, rules about who may practise Ayurveda differ from country to country, so ask about training and registration where you live, and tell your regular doctor about any Ayurvedic care you receive.

Tools on this site

The tools show the working behind each result and describe the tradition. A result from a tool is not a diagnosis. A tool that describes a dosha type, for example, is a simplified questionnaire based on traditional descriptions and cannot replace a proper assessment.

Accuracy, and limits of our responsibility

We take care to attribute claims to their sources and to correct mistakes quickly, and our method and sources page explains how. Even so, we cannot promise that every page is complete, current or free of error, and different Ayurvedic teachers disagree with one another. To the extent the law allows, we accept no responsibility for decisions made on the basis of this site. Nothing here limits any right you have under law that cannot be limited.

Questions

If something on the site looks unsafe or wrong, please write to [email protected] or use the contact page, and we will look at it promptly.
